FAVORITE SONGS FROM CHEESY 1980’S FILMS, PART 3
“Nowhere Fast” by Fire Inc. in Streets of Fire
Long before the very milf-y but lame Diane Lane of Nights in Rodanthe, Untraceable and Must Love Dogs, there existed a punk rock Diane Lane who starred in films like Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains and Streets of Fire — she wore tight dresses, gave lots of stern looks and lip-sanc like there was no tomorrow. “Nowhere Fast” was my first encounter with the ‘punk rock Diane’ and I fell in love. The song has it all: catchy lyrics, twirling, motorcycle sound effects that sound like you hit a wrong note in Guitar Hero, and the creepy creepy face of Willem Dafoe appearing from the shadows. It’s a masterpiece.
Fun facts about Fire Inc (the band that recorded the two songs performed in Streets of Fire):
They were a Wagnerian rock band that released only two songs—”Tonight Is What It Means to Be Young” and “Nowhere Fast.” The songs never had any real commercial success, but “Nowhere Fast” was later re-recorder by Meat Loaf for his 1984 album, Bad Attitude. In 1989 Jim Steinman put together another band, Pandora’s Box, in which he included 8 of the 14 original members of Fire Inc.
Favorite lyrics:
And I don’t know where I ever got the bright idea that I was cool
So alone and independent
But I’m depending on you now
And you’ll always be the only thing that I just can’t be without
And I’m out for you tonight
I’m comin’ out for you tonight!
