It’s a simple, bittersweet love story about two plain individuals (“She’s a dog. And I’m a fat, ugly man.”) who find each other after a slew of disappointments and rejections from the opposite sex. It starts out pathetic, but, ultimately there’s something there that rises above resigned co-dependence. Their ‘uglyiness’ takes on an appealing sparkle when they’re in each other’s presence ; their shyness melts; and while their friends and families remain paralyzed by their loneliness, and superficial anxiety, Marty and Clara begin to realize that not fitting in may be an advantage.
It’s sweet without being saccharine.
