Because both take place primarily in a confined space? And both feature a rooftop scene and a drug dealer? They’re the same movie, basically.

To be fair, I do like both, very much. But I would not start a recommendation of The Room with, “Well if you like Kevin Smith’s sharply critical dialogue spoken by people who don’t sound like they’re trying to swallow half a ham steak, and scenes that follow one after the other in a logical pattern to create a cohesive whole, then you’ll love…”

Remembering Patrick Swayze: The Good, The Bad, and his friends at Ugly.

92Y Tribeca in New York recently presented a Swayze Days of Summer film series, with some of his more popular/acclaimed films (Dirty Dancing, The Outsiders) and the pulpy parts (Road House, Steel Dawn). It was a great celebration of his work and his love of acting, no matter the project. As we’ve seen from Donnie Darko, he was always able to laugh at himself a little bit.

He seemed incredibly classy (stayed committed to his wife through all his decades of heartthrobdom!), and if you’ve seen the instructional video Swayze Dancing, you know he loved his mom more than anything. Sweet guy.

Artist SD Elliott showed these fantasy portraits of Patrick Swayze at a group show in Portland earlier in the year. The above image, Mount Swayze, is available on eBay.

In the 1980s video cassette technology made it possible for “mobile cinema” operators in Ghana to travel from town to town and village to village creating temporary cinemas. The touring film group would create a theatre by hooking up a TV and VCR onto a portable generator and playing the films for the people to see.

These are the most interesting movie poster re-imaginings I have seen since the Polish ones that were making rounds a few years back. I think the fact that with some these the person hasn’t even seen the film, makes them even better.

“F@#!cking”? What word could that possibly be? Freacking? Francking? Floocking? A cursory browsing of a dictionary reveals no words with three letters between “f” and “cking.” Comix had the simple task of transcribing one of the most common words in stand-up, and they couldn’t even do that right. Is it supposed to be funny? Did Comix think, “we will make this statement funnier by pretending to not know how many letters should be replaced with zany symbols, except that no one will realize it’s a joke because we actually don’t know what real words are”?

Make sure to fulfill the two-item minimum if you don’t want to be choked to death attempting to leave the venue out of disgust. Try the $44 ravioli (plus another item)! Ha! Laughs! Laughx!

Renegade, also known as Blueberry for some reason, ostensibly features the names on the box. Juliette Lewis is on the left, yes, and her name is there. But the guy on the right is neither Michael Madsen nor Vincent Cassel, unless they pulled a Tropic Thunder on one of them. And the guy in the center, who we presume is supposed to be either Madsen or Cassel, is unidentifiable from that bit of chin. Did they just not bother to get a picture of either of their male stars? Juliette is also trying to figure out who these two guys are.

I stumbled onto Renegade/Blueberry on Netflix while trying to rate Renegades, a very good-bad buddyish coppish movie starring Lou Diamond Phillips as Hank Storm, Keifer Sutherland as Buster McHenry (back when all movie characters were named after toy designers), and Keifer Sutherland’s Mustache as Its Bushy Self.

Whoooosh! Hall and Oates Fight Back.

First: This charity seems like an excellent organization, one which provides clothing, supplies, and services to children and families who need them. You should consider donating time or money. It is a good cause!

HOWEVER: The photographs on their main page (hit refresh to see more, but most of them are here) are creepy. Kid-from-The-Ring creepy. I had initially thought they needed to maintain these kids’ anonymity, but there are faces all over the rest of the site, so I don’t know why they had to go all Jason Voorhees flashback here. Though maybe I’m just frustrated because I want to see more. These few images are starting to form a weird, fascinating narrative in my head, and I want to know how it ends.

A few months ago I started noticing this one short-term Brooklyn rental popping up over and over in different Craigslist ads. The description was generally the same in each of them, a long monologue about artistic freedom and the citizens of Planet Earth just getting along. The room was $475 if I recall, but I don’t remember if that was for a week (making it more of a vacation rental) or a month (artist’s retreat).

New ads were put up almost daily, always accompanied by a series of strangely conceived photographs of some guy’s back (though there were a few of some other guy’s back and side). Most of the photos were recycled from previous ads, but there were usually one or two new ones per post. I began obsessively collecting them, like a philatelist poring over the envelopes of grandma’s correspondence, looking for the next backwards-Lincoln-with-an-Indian-headdress.

The ads suddenly stopped one day, and I haven’t seen one since. Maybe they found a permanent resident, or maybe not enough people were into the idea of paying $475 to stare at a wall all day.

(A) We can assume they mean “while using the toilet.” Unless he’s got a “businessman’s convenience hole” cut into the back of that bathrobe, he’s fine.

(B) Someone got their Deep Throats mixed up.

(C) There is nothing to indicate that she is listening to music, especially when her computer is not on. Additionally, the only reason that she may possibly be Russian is her excellent posture. From what we see here, it’s much more likely that she loudly passed gas during a replay of Princess Di’s funeral. Which is a Don’t!

(link) I guess I’m a little behind on things, considering the guy has had multiple mentions on Jezebel (which I don’t read unless someone sends me a link), several interviews, a viral video, etc, but I only recently discovered Rich Juzwiak and his fourfour blog and it is now a favorite.

Without snark, Rich deconstructs the grotesque aspects of everything from reality tv to obscure documentaries into thoughtful, funny posts and clips that always leave me eager to see what’s next. Never before have I seen such genuine affection for the ugly things in pop culture.
